Oscars 2023: the highlights of the 95th ceremony
This new edition of the Oscars took place in Los Angeles on Saturday night at the Dolby Theater. From the opening speech to the big winners and Rihanna, discover the highlights of this 95th ceremony.
Last year, the big winners of this prestigious ceremony were unfortunately overshadowed by one of the biggest scandals of the Oscars since its creation, if not the biggest. And for good reason, Will Smith, a great actor of his generation, left his mark with a shocking gesture towards the president of the ceremony, Chris Rock. This year again, this media slap, which became historical, remains in everyone’s mind, as Jimmy Kimmel, the new master of ceremony, underlines.
The famous American host came back five times on this “slap” during the evening, not sparing Will Smith, now banned from the Oscars for a decade.
But the calm after the storm was rather appropriate during this 95th ceremony. The guests had the chance to see the interpreter of Diamond, Rihanna, perform for the second time in seven years. One month after her incredible show at the Super Bowl, the singer returned to the forefront by performing her latest track, Lift Me Up, written especially for the feature film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Dressed in black and sequins, the artist delivered a performance as dazzling as her dress, and paid a beautiful tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020, who played the famous superhero on the screen.

Rihanna was also in competition for this song, for the Oscar for best original song. But the little golden statuette did not go to her. It is the title “Naatu Naatu” of the feature film RRR that won the award.
And because the Oscars is not only a ceremony of awards, but also surprising performances, Rihanna faced Lady Gaga on Saturday night. The two interplanetary pop stars competed for the Oscar for best song, but also crossed paths on stage. Without makeup, dressed in a simple black tee shirt and braided hair, Lady Gaga performed her song Hold my hand. Only her voice counted and captivated all the ears.
Everything everyone all at once, big winner of the Oscars
Everything everywhere all at once, the film of directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, which mixes comedy-drama, kung fu and multiverse, leaves this ceremony with seven statuettes.
This feature film with its dramatic, absurd and comical allure overcame Top Gun and Avatar. It was the big favorite of the evening, with 11 nominations. It won the Oscar for best film, and the Daniels for best director. Michelle Yeoh, the protagonist of the story, the Oscar for best actress. A great first in the history of cinema, because she becomes the first Asian actress to win this award. The great Jamie Lee Curtis won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, as well as Ke Huy Quan, who won the same for the male role. The film also won the award for best screenplay and best editing.

During their acceptance speech, one of the two directors thanked the juries, his parents and others, talking about his weirdness and difference in general. Proof that the ceremony no longer hesitates to venture outside the conventions.
Another highlight of the ceremony was the crowning of Brendan Fraser, formerly Tarzan, who won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. After having put his career on hold, the 54-year-old actor signs with this film one of these come backs that all Hollywood loves. The physical transformation of the actor, who plays an obese professor, was praised by the Academy of the Oscars for best makeup and hairstyle.

Netflix in the spotlight
Edward Berger’s German film In the West, Nothing New, produced by Netflix, also swept the board, winning four Oscars: best foreign film, best original score, best picture and best set.
Adapted from a novel, it tells the story of the First World War from the point of view of a German soldier. It is the eighth film in the history of the Oscars to be nominated for both Best Foreign Film and Best Feature Film.
The Greats of the Cinema leave this time losers
This year, the great director Steven Spielberg did not win anything with The Fabelmans, a film about his youth and his parents. He could have won the Oscar for best director and best film, but he did not. It is one of the big losers of the evening, along with Inisherin’s Banshees, nominated nine times…without winning anything. As well as the fabulous biopic on Elvis Presley named simply Elvis, with eight nominations, but no award or Tar, left without anything, while it was competing for the best film and Cate Blanchett was nominated as best actress.
This 95th ceremony was able to demonstrate once again what is unique about American cinema.
