Château de Miraval: the legal battle between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie continues
Hollywood actor Brad Pitt has made new accusations against Angelina Jolie in their dispute over Château Miraval. In particular, he denounces his ex-wife’s disloyal attitude and accuses her of having sold his shares in the winery without his consent.
The legal battle between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt is not about to end. The American actor, who turns 60 this year, has reactivated legal proceedings against his ex-wife, accusing her of selling his shares in their French château de Miraval without his consent.
Château de Miraval is a 17th-century Provençal château-bastide in the commune of Correns, in the Var region of France. It comprises a 600-hectare estate that includes a pine forest, an olive grove and a 30-hectare Provence vineyard.
The complaint, filed on June 1 by Brad Pitt’s lawyers with the California court handling the divorce, highlights new documents. These accuse Jolie of attempting to “seize profits she has not earned and returns on an investment she has not made”, and describe her actions as “vindictive”.
Subject of litigation
In 2011, after renting the château for three years for their vacations, the acting couple acquired Château de Miraval and its estate for 35 million euros. They became owners of Miraval wines in a 50/50 partnership with winemaker Marc Perrin. The actors then undertook a 10 million euro renovation and refurbishment of the château in preparation for their wedding, which was held in privacy in August 2014.
But by October 2021, Angelina Jolie, separated from Brad Pitt, had sold her shares in the château and estate, now valued at $164 million (around €142 million), to the Tenute del Mondo wine group. This group is part of the portfolio of the Luxembourg company Stoli, owned by Yuri Shefler. According to the legal documents, Mr. Shefler is described as “an oligarch from the Russian Federation” and a man who, according to Brad Pitt, had already tried to buy Miraval from him, which he refused.
Lack of consent
In the new documents, Brad Pitt denounces his ex-wife’s disloyal attitude, and claims that she acted out of revenge after “an unfavorable decision in the custody of the children”. “Her decision to end negotiations with Pitt was intentional and a pretext. As the trial will demonstrate, Jolie’s actions were unlawful, seriously and intentionally harming Pitt and unjustly enriching him”, the new documents quote.
Above all, the actor claims that there was no mutual consent in the sale of Jolie’s shares in the Tenute del Mondo winery. Indeed, at the time of the purchase of the property, the couple had signed an agreement stipulating that no transfer of shares was possible without the consent of both parties.
Angelina Jolie’s lawyer, Paul Murphy, said that the sale of the shares would enable the actress to regain her “financial independence” in order to “find some form of peace and closure in this deeply painful and traumatic chapter of her life and that of her children”.
