The renovation of the Langham Hotel in Boston

The Langham in Boston has reopened after a multi-million dollar transformation over two years.

Boston’s historic Langham Hotel, which closed in 2019 for a two-year, multi-million dollar renovation, reopened earlier this month.

The nearly 100-year-old building opened in 1922 as Boston‘s original Federal Reserve Bank. The building’s first major upgrade since its conversion to a hotel in 1981 includes a renovation of its 312 rooms and suites, a new Club Lounge, bar and restaurant. The property was supposed to reopen in 2020, but pandemic-related delays pushed back the opening date by about a year.

We are very proud to reopen The Langham, Boston,” said Stefan Leser, CEO of Langham Hospitality Group, in a statement. “The hotel will be reinvented with a modern interpretation of warm American service combined with the centuries-old European hospitality for which The Langham brand is so well known. These two halves will come together to ensure that The Langham will be Boston’s finest hotel, showcasing new world luxury in a grand, historic building.”

In terms of renovation, the rooms and suites have been completely redesigned. They all feature new marble-clad bathrooms and New England-inspired décor. In the case of the hotel’s iconic Loft Suites, two-story brass windows accentuate the split-level living room and bedroom. The hotel’s two-story lofts feature a first-floor dining and living room next to renovated repoussé brass windows and an upper-level bedroom.

The new lobby is also elegantly appointed, decorated in jewel tones, with a large fireplace, ample seating, with an upscale concierge area and a check-in desk for guests upon arrival.

The Fed, the hotel’s new cocktail bar, has both indoor seating and an outdoor terrace. The 1920s lounge bar will feature “a British cocktail bar menu with a New England twist,” according to the hotel. “The Fed is positioned to be an iconic destination bar unlike anything this city has seen,” Michele Grosso, general manager of The Langham, Boston, said in a statement. “Sophisticated yet playful, it will offer a welcoming atmosphere, an inspired cocktail menu and shareable food, and we anticipate a lively mix of neighborhood residents, local tastemakers and hotel guests to gather each afternoon and well into the night.”

For dining, you can find Grana, the hotel’s Italian restaurant, located in what was once the great hall of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. A 7-foot wire mesh sculpture inspired by the Liberty coin hangs above the staircase and the Federal Reserve’s seal appears on the floor. “These two new spaces bring the legacy of this beautiful property and the promise of all the amazing things to come for our new classic American hotel.” the hotel enthuses in the same release.

The Governor’s Room meeting room has been updated with checkered carpeting, an oak table with bronze detailing and leather inserts, and historic photos of the building as the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

Later this year, The Langham will introduce The Langham Club, a signature of The Langham Hotels & Resorts brand, with a private space where guests who have purchased access to the Club can meet, dine and socialize, including around an all-new pool, whirlpool and fitness center.
