Christie’s : The London edit, the exceptional sale of luxury bags
At Christie’s, a large auction of luxury handbags is being held through November 23. Some bags could fetch up to $100,000.
“Handbags Online : The London Edit” is open for online auction through November 23, with bags, luggage and accessories from luxury brands, offered by Christie’s.
Among the highlights of the sale are handbags of all colors from French leather goods maker Hermès, known for its Birkin and Kelly lines that easily fetch more than $10,000.
Leading the lots is a Hermès Birkin 20 Matte Concrete Alligator, White Togo & Swift Leather Faubourg Sellier bag, depicting the facade of Hermès’ Paris flagship store on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, estimated at £80,000 to £100,000 (approximately €95,000 to €119,000), in view of its rarity and exceptional condition.

“It’s very unusual to see so many bags at the same time, because obviously every time you go into a store you’re not going to see so many designs and colors,” said Lucile Andreani, head of EMEA handbag and accessories sales at Christie’s, at a preview on Thursday. “We have close to 200 bags (…) starting at £100 and that goes up to £80,000, so it’s a very wide range.”
Other Hermès bags include a limited edition chevron pattern Fauve Barénia & Bog Oak Kellywood 22, priced between £60,000 and £80,000, and a Birkin 35 in shiny Cocoan Porosus crocodile, adorned with 18-karat yellow gold and yellow sapphire, estimated at £50,000-70,000.
Apart from the handbags, other surprising objects complete the sale, such as a Louis Vuitton zinc explorer’s trunk, dating from the 1890s and estimated to cost between 30,000 and 40,000 pounds, or a Chanel acoustic guitar, estimated between 5,000 and 7,000 pounds.
