Grammy Awards : the highlights of the 65th edition
The Grammy Awards, which took place last Monday, reward the best American recordings, compositions and artists of the past year. This 65th ceremony was marked by historical awards but also by some not very fair behaviors or reactions.
The 65th edition of the Grammy Awards was held on the night of February 5 to 6 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The biggest American stars of the music industry in 2022 were obviously there. Beyoncé, Lizzo, Harry Styles or even Kendrick Lamar were for their part distinguished during the ceremony rewarding the best recordings, compositions and artists of the year (from 1ᵉʳ October 2021 to 30 September 2022). Beyond these (sometimes historic) awards, the 2023 edition of the Grammy Awards also generated many reactions, not always fairplay, from Internet users and spectators who attended the ceremony.
Historic awards
Beyoncé definitely made history at this 65th edition of the Grammy Awards. She won four new awards, including for best R’n’B song (“Cuff It”) and best dance/electronic album (“Renaissance”), adding to the 28 she already has. With 32 awards, Queen B becomes the most successful artist of all time at the Grammy Awards. She surpasses the British-Hungarian chef, Georg Solti, who died in 1997, who had won 31 Grammies. This new edition also makes her tick another record, that of the number of nominations at the ceremony, which she now holds ex-aequo with her husband, Jay-Z. In total, the singer has been nominated 88 times. No doubt that the singer from Destiny’s Child is still at the top.
Beyoncé wasn’t the only one to make an impression tonight. In the category of Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, Kim Petras and Sam Smith were honored for their song Unholy. With this award, Kim Petras became the first openly trans woman to be decorated in one of the main categories. During her speech, the artist made a point of thanking “the incredible transgender legends” who came before her and gave her the confidence to take the stage. She was referring here to Sophie, a British electronic music producer and performer who passed away in 2021. Her award thus becomes part of the history of the Grammy Awards, alongside Sam Smith, now also considered the first openly non-binary artist to have won the famous gramophone.
Stars in the spotlight
In the United States, the stars are closely observed by the public, and some facts did not fail to make talk. Madonna has received a lot of criticism about her appearance. The 64-year-old singer went on stage to introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith. While she displayed an unrecognizable face, probably because of surgery, she was subjected to a flood of negative comments. Madonna decided to respond in an Instagram post. Sharing the highlights of the evening, she took the opportunity to denounce ageism and a heavy misogyny.

For his part, Ben Affleck was displayed alongside Jennifer Lopez with a very singular pout. The actor has indeed let see an undeniable boredom. In front of Stevie Wonder’s performance on Higher Ground, his lack of enthusiasm was very noticed and triggered many reactions among Internet users, who did not fail to parody it.

In short, the 65th edition of the Grammy Awards has certainly risen to the top by making history. But without escaping, either, the usual snags of the long American award ceremonies…
