René Piechulek triumphs at the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

One of the most anticipated horse races of the year, the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, was held yesterday at the Longchamps racecourse. The race, which pitted the world’s top 15 thoroughbreds against each other, was won by the German horse Torquator Tasso, ridden by jockey René Piechulek.
A legendary race was held yesterday on the Longchamps racecourse in Paris. The Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, founded in 1920, was held for the 100th time. This race, sponsored by the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club since 2008 and considered the most prestigious in the world in terms of quality, pits fifteen of the world’s best thoroughbreds, both males and females, against each other over a distance of 2,400 metres.
This year’s winner of the race took home €2,857,000 of the €5 million prize money.
The outsider Torquator Tasso, ridden by the jockey René Piechulek, comes out winner of this hundredth edition, a victory that surprised many spectators and observers. Prestigious guests were present in the audience to watch this prestigious competition as for example Princess Anne of the United Kingdom, the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and a great fan of horse racing. She presented the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe trophy to the winner at the end of the race.
Edouard de Rotschild, son of Baron Guy de Rotschild, and his partner Irene Salvador, were also present to witness the event. Edouard de Rotschild is also an accomplished horseman and competes for Israel in international equestrian competitions.
René Piechulek, the winner of the race, still can’t believe his victory. “This is my first ride. It’s exceptional, I did it“, he said at the end of the race. “I don’t know what’s happening to me. I don’t know what’s happening to me, it’s unbelievable. I had a brilliant run down the straight. I made him do his acceleration and he did it”.
With this success, Torquator Tasso, the powerful horse trained by Marcel Weiss, brought his owners from the Gestut Auenquelle stable the 2,857,000 euros promised to the winner by the race sponsor. This was Germany’s third success in this prestigious race.
However, the victory seemed far from certain. With an odds of 70/1, Torquator Tasso and René Piechulek started as outsiders. Moreover, a large part of the race was dominated and animated by Adayar. Torquator Tasso did not have a perfect ride as he travelled in third thickness before pronouncing his effort in the final straight to win ahead of all the favourites. It was a historic day for the young jockey, who achieved the feat of winning this prestigious race in his first ever participation.
