The selection of films at the Cannes Film Festival
The selection of films for the 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival has just been announced. On the program: 61 films, including 24 in the running for the Palme d’Or.
After being postponed due to the health situation, the 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be held from July 6 to 17. This year, the Palme d’Or will be awarded at the end of the awards ceremony, on July 17, by the American director Spike Lee, who chairs the Jury of the Festival.
The selection of films was announced by the general delegate Thierry Frémaux on Thursday, June 3, during a press conference held in a Parisian cinema and which you can find below. The selection will include a total of 61 films, 24 of which are in the running for the Festival’s Palme d’Or.
About the selection, Thierry Frémaux says “It ended last night very late and will still evolve !” The conference also unveils the inauguration of the new multiplex cinema in Cannes, one of which will be used for screenings. In total, the complex, named Cineum Cannes, has 12 rooms and 2,450 seats.
Two-time Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster will be the guest of honor at the Festival‘s opening ceremony and will receive an honorary Palme d’Or. In the history of the Cannes Film Festival, the award has been given to the greatest figures of the cinema such as Agnès Varda, Jane Fonda, or Jean-Paul Belmondo.
To succeed the director of Parasite, the South Korean Bong Joon Ho, winner of the 2019 Palme d’Or at the last edition of the Festival, many films are in the running. Director Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel) will appear in the competition with his film The French Dispatch, shot in Angoulême, in the south of France. With its five-star cast that includes Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Timothée Chalamet, Adrien Brody, and Mathieu Amalric, the film is one of the Festival‘s favorites.
It will be the musical Annette that will open the Festival, for the great return of its director, Leos Carax (Amants du Pont neuf), who has not been in theaters for nearly 10 years. Actors Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver are the two headliners in the cast of this film, whose script and soundtrack come from the American rock band Sparks.
Also in the running for the Palme d’Or is Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) with his film Benedetta. Adapted from the book Sister Benedetta, between saint and lesbian by Judith C. Brown, the film tells the story of Benedetta Carlini, a lesbian nun played by Virginie Efira in the 17th century.
The director Nanni Moretti, winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2001 for his film The Son’s Room, presents his latest film, Tre Piani, whose screenplay is adapted from the homonymous literary work by Eshkol Nevo.
